Bonk Shines Bright: Joshua Fleming and Victor Kornienko Advance to the Third Round at the 77th Future Masters

This week, Team Bonk members Joshua Fleming and Victor Kornienko delivered exactly that, battling their way through to the third round of the prestigious 77th Annual Press Thornton Future Masters at Dothan Country Club in Dothan, Alabama.
An Elite International Field
The Future Masters is one of junior golf’s crown jewels, drawing an extraordinarily talented field. This year’s tournament saw a record applicant pool of over 1,000 young golfers, with the selected competitors hailing from 39 states and 11 countries. These are the best of the best — top-ranked juniors with national and international pedigrees, many already boasting AJGA wins, strong college commitments on the horizon, and proven success on premier junior tours. 
Joshua and Victor weren’t just competing against local standouts — they faced a global gauntlet of rising stars, many with elite junior rankings and experience that tested every aspect of their games. Making the cut and advancing deep into the tournament against this level of competition is a remarkable achievement that highlights their talent and mental toughness.
Battling the Elements: Long Days and Rain Delays
Golf at this level already demands focus over long, demanding days on a classic, challenging layout like Dothan Country Club. But Mother Nature added another layer of difficulty this week, with multiple weather delays caused by rain and lightning. Rounds stretched late into the afternoon and evening, with players waiting out storms, restarting on soaked courses, and pushing through fatigue that would test even seasoned professionals.
Only a portion of the 13-14 age group, for example, managed to complete their opening rounds on schedule due to the disruptions. These weren’t quick showers — they turned what are already grueling tournament days into marathons of patience, mental reset, and physical endurance.
Joshua Fleming: Poise Under Pressure
From Deerfield Beach, Florida (Class of 2032), Joshua has been a standout on the junior circuit all year. In the competitive 13-14 division, he showed incredible poise against top national talent. At one point, he was tied for the lead after strong early play, including clutch birdies that kept him in contention. 
Navigating rain delays, restarting momentum, and grinding through extended hours on the course, Joshua’s perseverance shone through. His ball-striking and putting held steady even as conditions tested everyone’s focus. Advancing to the third round against this stacked field is a testament to his competitive fire and ability to stay locked in when others falter.
Victor Kornienko: Trailblazing Heart and Dedication
Victor, from Saint Petersburg, Russia, made history as the first Russian junior invited to the Future Masters. Facing not only elite domestic competition but also the challenges of international travel and being one of the younger players in his division, Victor’s short game and resilience were on full display.
Long days compounded by weather interruptions required extra mental fortitude — waiting, refocusing, and then executing under pressure. Victor’s advancement speaks volumes about his dedication and ability to persevere through adversity, traits that will serve him well as he continues to break new ground in the sport.
