BONK TEMPO Field Testing #4 & #5 — Finding the Rhythm

Managed to get out the last two days to continue testing the effectiveness of BONK Tempo in real on-course conditions, and the results ended up revealing something extremely important about how the device is meant to be used.

Day 1 — League Play Struggles

The first outing continued testing of the wearable watchband prototype with the BONK Tempo device installed directly into the cradle. Once again, conditions here in Michigan were cold enough to require a BONK hoodie throughout the round, which conveniently kept the watchband secured underneath the sleeve.

Performance-wise? Brutal.

Nine-hole league stroke play on the back 9 at the club — arguably the easiest and most scoreable stretch on the course — resulted in an abysmal 47. Easily one of the worst performances of the year so far.

What was interesting, however, was that Tempo itself didn’t appear to negatively impact performance either. The device wasn’t creating tension or distracting from the game. It simply wasn’t delivering the type of immediate “on-course fix” that I had originally hoped for by just turning it on and stepping to the first tee.

And that realization became critically important the very next day.

Day 2 — Tournament Round & Breakthrough

The second outing was an 18-hole tournament round, but this time there were two major differences:

  1. I spent significant time warming up on the range using BONK Tempo before the round.
  2. I switched from the wearable watchband setup to mounting the device directly onto my BONK hat.

These changes immediately stood out.

The hat-mounted setup simply felt more natural and less intrusive during play. Instead of feeling like I was consciously “wearing” a training aid on my wrist, the device almost disappeared while mounted on the bill of the hat. The haptics still translated effectively, but mentally it felt less distracting and more integrated into the overall experience.

The warm-up approach itself was intentionally simple:

  • 40 BPM setting
  • Smooth swings only
  • Started with a 9 iron
  • Then moved into a 7 iron
  • No driver
  • No woods
  • No wedges
  • No swing thoughts

The entire goal was simply to slow everything down, establish rhythm, and let the body begin syncing naturally to tempo before ever stepping onto the course.

The results were impossible to ignore.

After shooting 47 on the same back 9 just one day earlier, the tournament round started with 3 birdies in the first 4 holes on that exact same side of the golf course.

The difference in ball striking, balance, and overall rhythm was dramatic.

Despite playing in 16 MPH gusting winds, driver performance was arguably the best it has been all season, and the putting was absolutely lights out. The back 9 finished at 35, eventually leading to a 78 overall — the best round to date this season despite a tougher front side.

Major Takeaways From Testing

1. BONK Tempo Is Designed To Establish Rhythm — Not Create It Mid-Round

This may end up being one of the most important discoveries so far.

BONK Tempo appears to be most effective when used as a warm-up and preparation tool before the round begins rather than trying to “find tempo” during active competition after poor swings or rushed starts.

By warming up properly with rhythm first, the body seems to carry that tempo naturally onto the golf course.

2. The Hat Mount Continues To Feel Like The Most Natural Experience

After extensive testing between the watchband prototype and the hat-mounted setup, the hat configuration continues to feel more seamless during actual play.

The watchband remains functional and useful for testing, but mounting BONK Tempo directly to the hat:

  • Feels less intrusive
  • Keeps the hands and wrists completely unrestricted
  • Integrates naturally into the golfer’s setup
  • Allows the rhythm feedback to remain subtle instead of overwhelming

Ironically, the more “invisible” the device feels, the more effective it may become.

3. BONK Tempo Does NOT Fix Your Swing

And that’s actually important.

BONK Tempo isn’t some magical device that suddenly corrects swing flaws or eliminates bad golf shots. It doesn’t automatically repair mechanics.

What it does do is increase awareness of overall tempo and sequencing, which naturally promotes:

  • Better balance
  • Better timing
  • Better connection
  • Smoother transitions
  • Improved rhythm throughout the swing

In other words:

BONK Tempo trains feel — not thoughts.

4. Putting Performance Continues To Stand Out

One area where the effectiveness of BONK Tempo continues to become extremely noticeable is putting.

More specifically:

  • Distance control
  • Pace consistency
  • Weight of putts
  • Smoothness in the stroke

The device appears exceptionally effective at helping establish a repeatable rhythm on the greens, particularly with longer lag putts where tempo and pacing become critical.

This may ultimately become one of the strongest use-cases for BONK Tempo moving forward.

The biggest takeaway from these last two field tests is simple:

BONK Tempo is not about forcing golf swings.

It’s about helping golfers find rhythm, slow down mentally and physically, and create a more connected athletic motion before stepping onto the golf course.

Because when rhythm improves, everything else tends to improve with it.
